Surfing with Samudra

We live for what we love. And what we love is surfing. But for love to really be love, it must be shared. We can’t think of anything more fun than sharing the pleasure of riding waves with people, regardless of their ability or background. We welcome you to join us on our surfing adventures - whether it be in the swell magnet region of WA, or the cruisy warm waters of Byron... we invite you to share our secrets.

Learn to Surf

Samudra is dedicated to the process of teaching surfing in fun and safe environments around the globe. The simple act of riding a surfboard can seem quite complicated and, without tuition, the beginner can experience enormous frustration.

Samudra has developed an accelerated classroom to surf program that removes many of the hurdles associated with learning to surf. We provide you with a safe and un-intimidating environment where everything is explained thoroughly. Our highly trained and experienced watermen/women will address technique, equipment, oceanography, safety, etiquette, and your specific goals. Join a retreat or book in for lessons and in the meantime check out our fitness preparation below to help get you started.

Intermediate Surfers

Surfing differs from most other sports in that it can rarely be learned overnight. It takes years to master the sport and feel comfortable riding waves in different locations and conditions. Often a surfer’s progress can plateau in the novice stage, where the transition from whitewater waves to riding green waves out the back becomes apparent. Our coaches are well aware of this and other such hurdles along the surfer’s path, and draw from their own personal experience and studies to help drive your surfing to the next level, and beyond. In the meantime, help yourself out by working on your core strength & stability.

Samudra recognizes that surfing is more than a sport. Surfing is life. It is a lifestyle. Therefore we will share additional surf information about the history, oceans, environment, culture, and the faces that give this art form its international appeal.

Advanced Surfing

For experienced surfers there seems to be two overriding objectives: riding deeper and surfing for longer. For those for wanting to push their limits, explore further, get deeper and more vertical we suggest joining Samudra at one of our high profile surf locations such as Margaret River, WA, Indonesia, Maldives and Morocco.
To enable you to surf for longer, with more ease we believe practicing yoga regularly is the key. Yoga can bring a greater awareness of your body's movements and restrictions. Our yoga sessions are specifically designed to keep the muscles for surfing supple and strong. Looking beyond just stretching we aim to tap into the core strength & stability used to maximize your surfing.

For top level athletes we work with you to design a specific program that incorporates breathing, mental preparation, fitness, core training, strength and flexibility to ensure you are in top form for the competitive world.

Surfing for fun

We believe Surfing can be enjoyed by anybody. The act of catching your first wave or riding your first tube will send a smile to your face that will last for days, and have you returning for more. We invite you to come and learn to surf and experience the fun and stoke of sharing waves with new friends at our several surfing camp locations.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

One of the best ways of describing what we're doing...is to define our roles as 'evolutionary surfers.' Everything is made of waves. At the level of electrons and neutrons…Historical waves - cultural waves. The more you think about the evolutionary process, the more you see the fundamental structure of nature itself. It's the quantum theory…dealing with quantum leaps and quantum waves…things come packaged in sequential, cyclical, moving, ever-changing forms.

Fitness Preparation

Before your first retreat or surf lesson we recommend developing your fitness where you can. Here is a guide that we suggest will benefit your surfing:

  • Swimming (freestyle) 200-400m building to 1 or 2km 1-3 times per week.
  • 15-30mins jogging or walking on soft sand.
  • Paddling surfboard in still water 15mins and building.
  • Core strength (lower abdominal) exercises.
  • Remember Slowly build your fitness so you keep it up.
  • It's most important to stretch before and after exercise.
  • Keep up a maintenance program; try and do something active regularly (ideally 6 times per week).

If you have attended a Samudra lesson or retreat before you will be familiar with a program that works for you and your schedule.

If you are familiar with a yoga practice then continue this as regular as you can.
