Welcome to Samudra - Evolving To Live A Better Life

The word Samudra (sanscript.gif) is a Sanskrit term which means "Ocean". In Yoga, we often bind a pose, or create a symbolic seal of our intent to move inward. The word for this seal is "Mudra". It is our intent to bind the experience of ocean and body. Our highly experienced teachers aim to give you the tools to learn or develop your Astanga yoga practice, gain or deepen your awareness of the ocean, ride quality waves and nourish yourself with nutritious, wholesome food.

With our foundations firmly grounded in the ancient Astanga yoga practice, we feel it is important to sustain communities of exceptional, healthy and vibrant people. We are therefore devoted to promoting sustainable living. The key to this is consciousness. Everything we practice, teach and provide has a deep environmental ethos, drawing from nature as much as possible and embracing our place within it.

Our purpose-built space in Dunsborough, Western Australia epitomizes this commitment to sustainability. Here in the heart of the beautiful South West region we lead by example. Samudra Vision

At Samudra we aim to provide a space for people to be, to grow and exceed their expectations. Whether in the yoga studio or on a retreat, we intend to create life-changing experiences for our guests in sharing our passions for yoga , surfing and food for life . Through these core elements we want to teach people an awareness of their body and self, harness a connection with the ocean and provide the fundamentals of nutrition, its potential for healing and vitality in a nurturing environment.

Evolution

From a very early age, we at Samudra have felt an innate connection with the ocean and with nature. This connection has been nurtured by living the Australian way of life and by pursuing extraordinary experiences around the globe.

Our immersion in the Astanga Yoga way of living stemmed from a need to develop flexibility and enhance our balance when riding waves. A natural extension of our connection with the ocean and nature, Yoga allowed us to pursue an effective method to free the body from pain and allow us to recuperate from injury. To ensure our mind and body was open to working with all these elements, we also became mindful to the importance of food for vitality and the benefits of achieving a more spiritual understanding and self-awareness.

There is no doubt that Yoga, surfing and food are synergistic. By incorporating all into our lives, we benefit more than we might with a single practice; thus we are tapping into a fundamental law of Nature. We recognise that the whole is more powerful than the sum of its parts.

The sun salutation evolution from ape to man to surfing represents to us the process of opening up to maximum potential and reminds us to pay homage daily to the sun and to life. In tradition of the sun salutations and by practicing this ritual and lifestyle may we endeavor towards the fortune of having only good thoughts, hearing and speaking only good words and attaining a strong and sound body so that we may live a long life and one day, achieve oneness with the universe.

Our unique retreats capture the essence of this evolutionary experience. By teaching the core fundamentals and the finer points of Yoga, surfing and food for life, we will bring you on board with the fun and pleasure of the Samudra Philosophy. Our methods are simple, yet profound and can be learned by anyone with an open mind. Your new found connections will spill over into your life, beyond the yoga mat with the memory of the sand squeaking beneath your toes.
